This event, which involved Trump serving food to a select group of supporters in the drive-thru, led to a surge of politicized comments on Yelp. As a result, Yelp has disabled new reviews for the restaurant to maintain the integrity of user feedback. The decision was made on October 21, a day after the event, to ensure that comments reflect “genuine, firsthand” experiences with the establishment.

Yelp’s Intervention Amid Political Backlash

According to CBS MoneyWatch, Yelp flagged the Feasterville location for “unusual activity” as it saw approximately 145 new reviews within a short timeframe. Trump’s visit was largely symbolic, as the restaurant was closed to the public during the event. However, the presence of the former president sparked significant controversy. While McDonald’s Corp. clarified that the event did not serve as a presidential endorsement, the reviews showcased starkly polarized opinions. For instance, one reviewer remarked on Trump’s hygiene practices while another criticized the restaurant for alleged ties to felons, referencing Trump’s past legal troubles.

Despite the negative reviews, some commenters argued that these critiques were politically driven. One reviewer lamented that the establishment was being “review bombed” by individuals who likely had never visited. Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt also condemned the negative feedback, suggesting it was the result of politically motivated attacks against the small business, stating, “It’s sad yet unsurprising that deranged liberals would degrade a small business simply because they can’t stand Donald Trump.”

Yelp’s Commitment to Genuine Reviews

Yelp emphasized that its primary concern is maintaining consumer trust, which prompted the decision to disable reviews for the Feasterville McDonald’s. The platform aims to protect the quality of its content through both technological solutions and human moderation. In a statement, Yelp expressed, “When we see the activity dramatically decrease or stop, our moderators will clean up the page so reviews describing only firsthand consumer experiences are reflected.” This approach underscores Yelp’s commitment to ensuring that its reviews are credible and reflective of actual customer experiences rather than politically charged opinions.

As the debate continues over the intersection of politics and business, the situation at the Feasterville McDonald’s highlights the challenges faced by local establishments in an increasingly polarized environment.
