Elon Musk has pledged affordable Starlink India pricing for satellite internet as his company prepares to compete with Reliance Jio, intensifying tensions with billionaire Mukesh Ambani days before Jio Platforms launches a record initial public offering.

Musk made the pledge on Saturday in posts on X, arguing that competition would give Indian consumers more choices. However, he did not announce specific prices, leaving questions about how Starlink will compete in a market where mobile data costs about 8 cents per gigabyte.

Musk targets India’s low-cost internet market

“Obviously, if Starlink is too expensive in India, no one will buy it, so SpaceX will need to make pricing affordable,” Musk wrote on X, according to Reuters.

Musk said competition could benefit ordinary Indians even if it reduces Ambani’s profits. His comments signal a potential pricing challenge for Jio, which built its position in the Indian telecommunications market by offering low-cost data services.

Starlink, owned by Musk’s SpaceX, provides internet access through a network of satellites. Its service could offer an alternative to traditional broadband and mobile networks, particularly in areas where terrestrial infrastructure is limited.

However, affordability will be a key factor for Starlink India pricing in attracting Indian customers. With mobile data among the world’s cheapest, Starlink must determine whether it can offer satellite connectivity at prices that appeal to households and businesses.

Jio IPO raises stakes in satellite competition

Musk’s pledge comes as Jio Platforms prepares for an IPO targeting a valuation of $106 billion, Reuters reported on Oct. 9, citing sources familiar with the matter. The offering would be India’s largest initial public offering.

Jio Platforms owns Reliance Industries’ telecommunications business, which has played a central role in expanding affordable mobile internet access across India. The company’s scale and established customer base could present a significant challenge for Starlink.

Both companies also have ambitions in satellite connectivity. Starlink is awaiting final security clearance to launch its service in India, while Jio’s satellite venture is facing the same regulatory hurdle.

The pending approvals mean neither company can yet rely on regulatory clearance to establish its satellite business in the country. The outcome could shape competition in India’s expanding internet market, where satellite services may complement existing mobile and broadband networks.

Musk accuses government of favoring Jio

Musk’s latest comments follow a series of posts accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government and Ambani of delaying Starlink’s entry into India to protect Jio’s market position.

On Friday, Musk directly taunted Ambani by calling him “Prime Minister Ambani” and asking whether he would consider allowing Starlink to compete, Reuters reported.

India’s government has denied allegations of bias in the approval process, saying that Starlink, Jio and another satellite venture seeking to operate in the country are all awaiting final security clearance.

The dispute marks a shift in the public relationship between Musk and Modi, who have previously maintained a warm rapport. It also highlights the commercial stakes as satellite internet providers seek access to one of the world’s largest internet markets.

Reliance Industries has not responded to requests for comment on Musk’s remarks, Reuters reported.

Musk’s Starlink India pricing pledge sets out his intended approach but leaves the central question unanswered: whether Starlink can offer satellite internet at a price that attracts Indian consumers while competing with Jio’s established low-cost services.
