Intel is reportedly developing an eight-core Panther Lake chip with four Xe3 graphics cores for lower-cost gaming handhelds, expanding its strategy beyond premium devices.
Intel reportedly develops smaller handheld chip
The unconfirmed chip reportedly uses a 4+0+4+4 design, with four performance cores, no standard efficiency cores, four low-power efficiency cores and four Xe3 graphics cores, according to hardware reporting citing leaker Jaykihn.
The configuration matches existing Panther Lake chip processors such as the Core Ultra 5 325 and 335, which use eight CPU cores and four Xe3 graphics cores. The reported handheld version would be smaller than Intel’s current Arc G3 lineup, which was designed specifically for gaming handhelds.
Intel has not announced the reported SKU or confirmed plans to use the configuration in a gaming handheld.
The report comes as Intel expands its presence in a market dominated by processors from rival AMD. Intel introduced its Arc G3 and Arc G3 Extreme processors in May as its first processor family specifically designed for Windows 11 gaming handhelds.
Arc G3 targets higher-end handhelds
Intel’s current Arc G3 lineup includes the Arc G3 and Arc G3 Extreme. The chips use 14-core configurations and feature 10 or 12 Xe3 graphics cores, respectively, according to Intel specifications and reporting.
The higher-end approach has already appeared in devices such as MSI’s Claw 8 EX AI+, while Acer and OneXPlayer are also among Intel’s launch partners. Intel said Arc G-Series systems began rolling out from partners in June.
Nish Neelalojanan, Intel’s senior director of product management, said the company designed the Arc G3 chips specifically around the needs of handheld systems.
“The power management for handheld needed to be more customized,” Neelalojanan told Tom’s Hardware in June. He said Panther Lake’s architecture provided an opportunity to optimize the platform for lower-power gaming.
Neelalojanan also described the handheld chips as “completely unique chips,” explaining that Intel reduced core counts and connectivity compared with laptop-oriented Panther Lake designs to remove hardware that handhelds do not need.
Smaller chip could lower device costs
A smaller Panther Lake design could give Intel another option for manufacturers seeking lower-cost gaming handhelds. The reported chip would use fewer CPU and graphics cores than the Arc G3 family, potentially reducing silicon and platform costs.
Intel has also acknowledged the importance of value-focused products as hardware prices rise. Neelalojanan said the company wanted to bring newer features to “the budget-conscious buyer” rather than relying only on older processors for lower-priced systems.
Still, a cheaper processor alone would not guarantee a cheaper handheld. Memory, storage, displays, batteries, cooling systems and other components also affect the final retail price.
Intel’s existing Arc G3 processors are based on Panther Lake, the architecture behind the company’s Core Ultra Series 3 processors. Intel says the Arc G-Series is built around performance, power efficiency and software features such as XeSS 3 for handheld gaming.
For now, the reported 4+0+4+4 handheld chip remains unconfirmed, according to a report from TweakTown. Intel has disclosed no launch date, product name, specifications or pricing for such a processor.
