Jeep, under Stellantis ownership, has introduced the highly anticipated 2024 Wagoneer S, marking the brand’s first foray into the all-electric SUV market in the United States. Priced starting at approximately $72,000, the Wagoneer S is slated to hit the market this fall, representing a significant milestone for the iconic American SUV brand, which has faced challenges in domestic sales in recent years.
Jeep’s Transition to Electrification
Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa expressed enthusiasm for the Wagoneer S, touting it as a landmark achievement in the brand’s history. Emphasizing Jeep’s commitment to embracing electrification, Filosa highlighted the vehicle’s role as the first global all-electric model manufactured in North America. Despite the slower-than-expected adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the U.S., Jeep remains optimistic about consumer acceptance, positioning the Wagoneer S as an addition to its diverse lineup, which includes traditional gas-powered SUVs, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and extended-range electric vehicles.
Key Features and Pricing
The Wagoneer S will debut with a “Launch Edition,” equipped with a 400-volt, 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack capable of over 300 miles on a single charge. Boasting 600 horsepower and 617 pound-feet of torque, the EV promises impressive performance, with a 0-60 mph acceleration of 3.4 seconds. Notably, it can charge from 20% to 80% in just 23 minutes using a DC Fast charger. The starting price of $71,995 positions the Wagoneer S EV between the gas-powered Wagoneer and the more luxurious Grand Wagoneer.
Future Plans and Electrification Strategy
Looking ahead, Jeep plans to introduce less expensive variants of the Wagoneer S approximately six months after the launch of the Launch Edition. Additionally, the company will unveil a new midsize SUV next year to replace the discontinued Cherokee. Filosa also revealed plans to introduce electric and extended-range versions of the traditional gas-powered Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer by 2025, leveraging innovative technology to enhance the brand’s offerings.
Stellantis’ EV Offensive in the U.S.
The debut of the Wagoneer S marks the beginning of Stellantis’ electric vehicle offensive in the U.S. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares outlined the company’s strategy to introduce six to eight all-electric vehicles this year, signaling a significant shift toward electrification. The Wagoneer S is expected to be followed by additional EV models, including a Wrangler-inspired off-road vehicle and a budget-friendly EV, reflecting Stellantis’ commitment to meet evolving consumer demands and regulatory requirements.
Environmental Sustainability and Design Innovation
In line with growing environmental consciousness, Jeep has prioritized sustainability in the Wagoneer S’s design. The interior features over 45 inches of screens, complemented by a blend of metal, faux leather, and other sustainable materials. Notably, wood has been omitted from the interior, and the exterior lacks chrome accents, reflecting input from younger designers aimed at enhancing sustainability and appealing to eco-conscious buyers.
The Wagoneer S represents a significant milestone in Jeep’s journey toward electrification, combining cutting-edge technology, performance, and sustainable design to usher in a new era for the iconic American brand.
