Tesla has announced a recall of 27,185 Cybertruck vehicles due to a problem with their rearview cameras, marking the fifth recall since the stainless steel electric pickup was introduced in December 2023. The issue involves the rearview display screen, which may remain blank for up to eight seconds after the driver shifts into reverse, significantly longer than the two seconds required by U.S. safety regulations.
Rearview Camera Software Issue
According to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the delayed activation of the rearview camera increases the risk of accidents by reducing visibility. Tesla noted in its recall notice, “A delayed rearview image reduces the driver’s view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.” The recall applies to certain 2024 Tesla Cybertrucks manufactured between November 2023 and September 2024, all of which are operating with specific software logic for low-voltage hardware.
Multiple Recalls and Owner Concerns
The Cybertruck has faced a series of challenges since its debut. In February 2024, nearly 2.2 million Tesla Cybertrucks due to an issue with the font size on the antilock brake system warning light, which was deemed too small to read. This was followed by a recall in April for approximately 4,000 vehicles due to a faulty accelerator pedal. In June, two additional recalls addressed defective windshield wipers and loose trim pieces.
In addition to these recalls, some owners have reported issues with rusting on the futuristic-looking SUV. The Cybertruck, priced between $57,390 and $96,390, has been a high-profile launch but has encountered significant hurdles in its first year on the road.
