As respiratory virus season approaches, the federal government has reopened its program to distribute free Covid-19 tests. Beginning today, US households can request four free test kits by visiting COVIDTests.gov. The tests will be shipped via the US Postal Service starting next week, providing quick and accessible testing options as the nation faces rising levels of the coronavirus.
Seventh Round of Free COVID-19 Tests Distribution
This initiative marks the seventh time the federal government has offered free Covid-19 tests. Since the program’s inception in 2021, over 900 million tests have been delivered to US residents. The tests, which take about 30 minutes to deliver results, can detect current COVID-19 variants and are suitable for anyone, whether they are experiencing symptoms or not. They are also effective for both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals.
According to the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the renewed program is part of the Biden-Harris administration’s broader effort to ensure the availability of over-the-counter tests during the fall and winter seasons. “Before you visit with your family and friends this holiday season, take a quick test and help keep them safe from COVID-19,” said HHS Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response Dawn O’Connell.
Accessible Testing for All
The new round of tests includes options designed to be more accessible for people with disabilities, such as those affecting dexterity or vision. For more details on ordering accessible test kits, individuals can visit ACL.gov/AccessibleTests. The rapid antigen tests are a key tool in determining whether a person has COVID-19, allowing them to take precautions and seek treatment if necessary.
“COVID-19 testing can help you know if you have COVID-19 so you can decide what to do next,” the HHS noted. This can involve getting treatment to reduce severe illness or isolating to prevent spreading the virus to others. The CDC recommends that those who test positive stay home until they are fever-free for at least 24 hours.
Vaccines and Prevention Measures
In addition to testing, the CDC urges all individuals aged six months and older to receive the updated Covid-19 vaccines available this season. Vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer have been modified to target the KP.2 variant, which has been dominant in the US since May. These vaccines are available for everyone aged six months and older. Novavax also offers a traditional protein-based vaccine for those 12 and up, targeting the JN.1 variant.
The updated vaccines are currently available at pharmacies across the country and can be administered alongside the seasonal flu vaccine. “The best plan going into this winter is for everyone to remain vigilant,” said CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen. She emphasized the importance of using all available tools, including vaccines, testing, and treatment, to reduce illness and hospitalizations during the colder months.
