Krafton, the publisher known for popular titles such as PUBG: Battlegrounds and The Callisto Protocol, has acquired Tango Gameworks, the studio famous for its work on The Evil Within series and Hi-Fi Rush. This acquisition comes after Tango Gameworks was shuttered by Microsoft and ZeniMax Media earlier this year. The acquisition also includes the rights to the critically acclaimed Hi-Fi Rush.

Smooth Transition and Continued Development

In its announcement, Krafton emphasized its commitment to a smooth transition for Tango Gameworks. The company plans to collaborate with Xbox and ZeniMax to ensure that the studio’s operations remain uninterrupted. Krafton has expressed its intention to support the Tango Gameworks team in continuing the development of the Hi-Fi Rush IP and exploring new projects. This approach aims to maintain continuity and allow the team to focus on delivering innovative and exciting experiences for fans.

Impact on Existing Game Catalog

Krafton has assured fans that the acquisition will not affect Tango Gameworks’ existing game catalog. This includes popular titles such as The Evil Within, The Evil Within 2, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and the original Hi-Fi Rush. Hi-Fi Rush is available on multiple platforms including PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. The acquisition means that the rights to these games, along with future developments, are now under Krafton’s ownership.

Tango Gameworks’ History and Recent Success

Founded in 2010 by Shinji Mikami, Tango Gameworks made a name for itself with its survival horror games, including The Evil Within series. Mikami, who had a notable career at Capcom with Resident Evil and other titles, led Tango Gameworks until his departure in 2023. The studio achieved significant success with Hi-Fi Rush in 2023, a rhythm-action game that diverged from its previous dark and violent themes. The game was well-received and was released as a surprise through Microsoft’s Game Pass subscription service.

Recent Industry Movements

This acquisition follows Microsoft’s announcement in May about the closure of several studios under the Bethesda Softworks umbrella, including Tango Gameworks. Other affected studios included Arkane Austin and Alpha Dog Studios, while Roundhouse Games had its staff reassigned. The recent move by Krafton comes on the heels of new developments in the industry, such as the establishment of Wolfeye Studio by former developers from Arkane Austin, further emphasizing the dynamic nature of the gaming sector.
